U2Baby Heads to the Button Factory for U250 - Welcome to the Northside

There are gigs, and then there's playing Dublin during a U2 anniversary. For a band that lives and breathes the sound, the look and the attitude of Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry, there's nowhere on earth quite like it — and this September we're back where it all matters most.

On Saturday 26th September, U2Baby take the stage at the Button Factory as part of U250 — Welcome to the Northside, the official fan festival marking U2's 50th anniversary. Doors and stage time are set for 6:30pm, right in the heart of Temple Bar, in a venue that's hosted some of the city's most electric nights of music. Tickets are live now on Eventbrite.

Why Dublin, and why us

We don't say this lightly: Dublin is the one city where a U2 tribute band genuinely gets tested. This is a crowd that grew up on Cedarwood Road, that queued for the Dandelion Market gigs, that knows every lyric change and every ad-lib Bono's ever thrown into "Bad." You cannot fake your way through a Dublin audience.

That's exactly why we keep getting the call. Over the years we've become the band that's flown in for the big Dublin fan weekends whenever U2 are in town — nights at The Church on the weekends U2 played Croke Park, sets outside the HP40 exhibition in Temple Bar, and now, U250 at the Button Factory. Welcome to the Northside has become one of the essential fixtures on the fan calendar, and being asked back to play their anniversary festival is about as close to an endorsement as a tribute band can get.

It doesn't hurt that Bono's own oldest friend has vouched for us. Guggi — the artist who's known Bono since they were kids on Cedarwood Road — once joked in Hotpress that he preferred us to the real thing, mostly because it's easier to get in the door. We'll take it.

What to expect on the night

This isn't a covers band running through the singles. We build our sets the way U2 actually play live — the extended intros, the crowd call-and-responses, the deep cuts sitting next to the anthems. Our repertoire spans the full arc of the catalogue, from Boy right through to Songs of Experience, so whether your U2 obsession started with "A Sort of Homecoming" or "With Or Without You," there's a place in the set for you. However on this night we are billed as “The Reinvention” so expect some materials that represent U2’s evolution during the late 80s through the 90s/00s.

Fans who've caught us before talk about closing their eyes and genuinely losing track of which band they're watching. That's the whole point. We're not trying to be a tribute in the "impersonation" sense — we're trying to recreate the feeling of being at an actual U2 show: the sing-alongs, the goosebumps, the moment the room goes quiet before a song like "One" kicks in.

Fifty years of U2, one very special night

U2 turning 50 is a big deal for anyone who's followed this band, and festivals like Welcome to the Northside exist because Dublin fans wanted a way to mark it properly — with their own community, in their own venue, on their own terms. Being trusted with a slot on that bill, in a room as storied as the Button Factory, is not something we take for granted.
